Ways To Teach Yourself Spanish

There are many reasons to learn to speak Spanish. It is the primary language spoken in half of the western hemisphere. It is the fourth most popular language in the world.  And in the U.S., the Spanish speaking population is exploding. Learning Spanish can expand your cultural horizons, enhance your travel experiences, let you communicate with new friends or customers, and make you more marketable in the job force. There are probably as many reasons to learn Spanish as there are Spanish students.

There are many ways to teach yourself Spanish. Some are practical and some are pretty extreme. You could move to Mexico or Spain for a year and learn “trial by fire”. I know one young man who did just that and you bet he learned in a hurry. You could take some private lessons with a Spanish tutor, but this would be very expensive. You could sign up for a class at your local college. This takes a time commitment and can’t be done at your own pace.  

There are now many excellent ways to learn Spanish at home that are very affordable. I love learning this way. You can learn totally at your own pace on your own timetable. You can repeat each lesson as many times as needed until you’ve got it. You get to learn in your own home, in your car while you commute, or on your iPod while you take a walk. There is a huge range of levels and styles available.  There are specialty programs such as Spanish for children, Spanish for “dummies”, Spanish for business, all the way up to advanced Spanish. Depending on your learning style, you can choose from lessons online, DVDs, audio CDs or CD-ROMs.  

Before you decide on a program to teach yourself Spanish, what is your preferred learning style?  Do you like to learn with audio?  Would you prefer to have Spanish CDs you could listen to in the car or would you rather have a downloadable course that you can load MP3 files onto your iPod?  Or are you the kind of person that needs visuals to go along with your audio?  Then you might prefer an online program or CD-ROMs. These types of Spanish courses are loaded with visual images to help you retain what you’ve learned. They also have interactive games and quizzes to keep learning lively.

Next, decide what level of Spanish you want to learn at this time. Do you want to just learn basic conversational Spanish for recreational purposes or are you serious about learning Spanish for business purposes?
