Homeschool Your Kids Spanish
If you are homeschooling and have decided to teach your children Spanish, it can be challenging. Especially if you don’t speak the language yourself! Whether you speak little or no Spanish, or are fairly fluent, here are some ways to make homeschooling Spanish a more rewarding experience for both you and your kids.There are many excellent reasons you might want your children to learn Spanish at home. The Spanish speaking population is huge and growing, especially in the United States. It is one of the easiest foreign languages to learn and can be a springboard to learn additional languages. Anyone bilingual will have a world of business opportunities open to them. Learning Spanish will open their eyes about how other people view the world. Knowing a second language makes a student more appealing to college admissions boards.
Anyone learns better and faster if they feel there is a real live reason for their learning. Brainstorm how you could experientially introduce them to the Hispanic culture. Do you live in an area where there is a Hispanic population? Does your city have a “little Havana” area you could visit? Do you have a relative or friend who speaks Spanish? Even visiting a Mexican or Spanish restaurant or grocery store could be a fun field trip. In my hometown even a trip to Lowes can be a Spanish lesson – all the signs are bilingual. Many cities have a variety of ethnic festivals you could visit, too.
Use music and TV to help you homeschool Spanish. Introduce educational programs on TV that have beginner’s Spanish lessons for children. Get some Spanish CDs and sing along.
Besides these ad hoc ways to make Spanish for children fun, you also need a curriculum or lessons plan. There are many excellent Spanish courses in many formats. There are Spanish courses on CD, DVD, and online. One program called Visual Link Spanish is accepted by NARSH (North Atlantic Regional High Schools) for 2 years of high school credit. This makes it a very popular course among homeschoolers. Their site offers a free Spanish homeschool curriculum.
Homeschooling Spanish doesn’t have to be hard and it can benefit your kids in so many ways. Why not learn Spanish alongside them if you don’t already speak it? Learning together can be a great deal of family fun and since they will probably pick it up faster than you, it will be a great self-esteem booster for them as they help you learn!
